Chapter 10

“Good morning, Catherine.” Mr. Gardiner looked up from his paper.

“Good morning, uncle,” Kitty returned his greeting as she sat down at the table in the Gardiner’s dining room to have a cup of tea. Was there a reason he used her full name?

Her uncle put his paper aside. His smile was pleasant. Perhaps he had just decided to use her full name for no particular reason.

“Your aunt informed me that you had an enjoyable evening.”

“I did!” Kitty exclaimed. “I danced all but two sets.”

It had been a delightful ball. She had never felt so wonderful as she had last evening with gentleman after gentleman asking her for a dance. It did not even bother her that some were likely doing it because they thought she had money. However, she had kept a list of names and would ask Mr. Linton when she saw him next. There were three days before she was promised to attend any soirees, so she had plenty of time to discover whatever she needed to know about each and every one of the gentlemen with whom she had danced.

“And I heard you lost your footing on the stairway.”

Kitty blushed. “It was foolish. I caught my toe on my dress, but I did not fall.”

“No, a gallant young man was there to catch you.” He smiled at her. “Your aunt told me. She did not tell me if he has eyes that are bluer than Mr. Waller’s, however.”

Kitty laughed. “He does not. Mr. Waller’s eyes are dark blue. Mr. Linton’s are lighter and more silvery but very striking.” In fact, they were the most captivating eyes she had seen last night. She quite liked them. Very much, truth be told.

“I also heard that he almost kissed you.”

Kitty swallowed the sip of tea she had taken before turning startled eyes toward her uncle. She had not told her aunt that! In fact, she had not even been certain if Mr. Linton had intended to kiss her. Her uncle was not looking at her but was spooning jam onto his toast.

“And,” Uncle Gardiner continued as he spread the jam all the way to the edges of his bread, “I hear he is hoping for your acceptance of something – an offer of marriage was implied.”

“You heard what?” Kitty forced the words out. Marriage? Acceptance? Of what was her uncle speaking?

“Just a bit of some fantastic tale in the paper. You know how it is, no names were given, but the clues are hard to miss.”

“Paper?”

Her uncle sighed. “I had feared it was a fabricated concoction.” He smiled softly at her. “I told your aunt we would have been told if any gentleman were to make an offer to you. I did not think you would keep anything so momentously happy from us.”

“I do not know of what you speak.” Panic, like an enormous wave, was swelling within Kitty and threatening to break over her and sweep her away when it withdrew from the shore.

Mr. Gardiner took a bite of his toast before picking up his paper.
